Cancer Thriver: A Rolfer's Story

Breast cancer was a game-changer, a life-changer and a soul-expanding experience.

Bottom line- surgery, radiation, chemo, oops another surgery or 10 more on various complications or new truths that needed attention.

It was a perfect storm- my live-in boyfriend of over four years moved out, two months later a cancer diagnosis and lastly, I’m self-employed with some disability insurance but certainly not enough. For the next three years, I kept having issues, having more surgeries, would recover, then do it all over again and again, and again. From more breast surgeries to skin cancers, soft tissue problems from the all the chemo and other drugs to Bells’ Palsy restorative surgeries, I was tired but determined to live and thrive- not just survive.

I am better than ever with joy in my heart, a healthy strong body and a clear mind, I love my work, my life, my energy.

I volunteer with my dog, Spanky, as a Pet Partners Therapy Team at Hartford Hospital’s Gray Cancer Center, having done so for the last thirteen years (also with my previous dog, Boscoboy). I love giving back, I love seeing the spark in people’s eyes when Spanky and I walk around the Hospital and into the Cancer Center. They smile, laugh and call out to Spanky. Perhaps for a moment, they forget this stressful time as they are visiting a not well person or plugged in and receiving all kinds of what I call “Magical Elixirs”. That I am almost eighteen years cancer-free and at the top of my game is inspiring to the hospital patients, my private-practice clients, my friends, my family and mostly to ME.

Having daily gratitude, excellent self-care, loving and giving as much as I can- are all aspects of myself that I discovered more deeply since facing cancer and doing our dance together. I am whole. I am full. I am at peace.
